If you pay attention to information the University sends about productions by The Theatre Company, you’ll know the work of Evans Tasiopoulos.

He has been capturing dynamic photos of productions and head shots of Detroit Mercy performers for about a year now. Early next year, his work will be seen on a much grander scale — billboard size — in the lobby of the GM Renaissance Center, after one of his photos was chosen as one of the four best images of the famed building in the GM Ren Cen 2017 Photo Contest. His moody image can be seen above.

“I went to Milliken Park, which is one of my favorite places in the city, and the river was frozen over and I stayed there taking photos as the sun set,” Tasiopoulos said. “The moment I saw that in my viewfinder, I knew I got something special, something unique.”

The contest judges thought so, too. The four winners were selected from more than 1,000 entries.

Tasiopoulos is an award-winning photographer with an international reputation. In 2016, he won the Pure Michigan Photo Contest and was a finalist in the Detroit News’ 10th Annual Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest; in  2012 he won the Detroit Free Press Detroit Self-Portrait Photo Contest. His work has also been featured in the London, England-based Loosen Art Magazine, the Greek publication Athens Voice Magazine, and in galleries in Venice, Rome and Berlin. His photograph of the Mediterranean Ocean from the Island of Milos was selected by voters to be featured in the country’s tourism print and digital publications.

The Campaign for University of Detroit Mercy is raising funds to ensure students benefit from the knowledge and support from impressive faculty and staff members like Evans Tasiopoulos.  Please consider making a gift toward the $100-million goal online or by calling 313-993-1250. Gifts of any size can make a major difference.
