Alumnus is a robotics rock star

Detroit Mercy alumni make a difference in the world, and people notice.

Joaquin Nuno-Whelan ’00 is a chief engineer at General Motors, but it’s his work with southwest Detroit students that earned him the attention of the Detroit Free Press, which featured him and his robotics teams in a recent article.

He recruits his coworkers and engineers from other corporations to mentor students at the Robotic Engineering Center of Detroit, where 173 students make up 11 FIRST Robotics teams, which compete across the state in engineering competitions.

The work is important because it taps and develops the talents of populations that are underrepresented in the engineering fields and, as a bonus, provides a pipeline for GM and other local companies to draw from in the future.
