Student recognized for commitment to service

Chanel Smith is surrounded by Detroit Public School 5th Graders on Better World Day, May 3, 2019. Chanel helped 5th grade students at Burns, Noble, Maybury, and Spain Elementary Schools organize book drives to support four local organizations: Brilliant Detroit, Detroit Hives, Caught Up, and We Found Hip Hop.

Rx for Reading Detroit Student Coordinator Chanel Smith received a State of Mind Award from the National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS) in recognition of her scholarship and community-engaged service. NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society.

Smith was also honored at the United Children and Family Head Start volunteer recognition luncheon, where she and Mary-Catherine Harrison, director of Rx for Reading Detroit and associate professor of English, were presented with awards for their community service leadership.

Smith will start her junior year at Detroit Mercy this fall. She is a biology major going into pre-med. Congratulations Chanel!
