This week is National Service Week! Service is part of UDMs mission; therefore, everyone should do what they can to give back/help out this week. Alpha Phi Omega is the service fraternity at UDM and is hosting an event everyday this week. Sunday APO did their award winning Sandwich Bus, in which they make 100s of bagged lunches and hand deliver them to the homeless around Detroit. Monday they went to the Salvation Army from 12-4pm to volunteer. Tuesday APO went to a senior home to play games and hang out with the elderly. Thursday APO is making scarves for the homeless from 12:45-2pm in the Quad Commons. Friday at 2pm anyone can meet by the rock to help do a campus cleanup! I am actually running the campus cleanup so encourage anyone to come out and help make this campus even more beautiful.
I will have gloves and trash bags to hand out and will direct groups to various areas on campus to pick up any trash they may be laying around. This is a great opportunity to give back to UDM.
Also, on Tuesday was a blood drive with the American Red Cross in the Fountain Lounge. Even with students prescheduling appointments, they had to wait up to, I heard, 2 hours. This is GREAT news because it means UDM students represented and donated a large amount of blood. The capacity and workload we gave the American Red Cross will hopefully encourage them to return next time with more volunteers to collect blood. I believe that every time you donate blood you can save 3 lives. The success of this blood drive speaks volumes about our student body. I am impressed that so many people are willing to help out.
Speaking of service….
Hunger and Homeless week is approaching November 16th-30th. Watch for events happening every day that week to raise awareness and help out the homeless during these hard economic times.
This time for comments I would like you to tell me about your favorite service project you’ve ever participated in or any service projects you would like to see happen. COMMENT BELOW!!
