“I work for the greatest (police) department in the country and went to the greatest school in the country. I’m forever in debt to them both.”

That’s what Abby (McCollum) Campbell ’14 told the Detroit Free Press for an article in today’s paper. Earlier this month, the ex-soccer player saved the life of a man who was threatening to jump off an overpass onto the Lodge Freeway. She spent more than an hour with the man listening, supporting and, ultimately, encouraging him to come to safety.

Tonight Abby will be honored  at the Titans Men’s Basketball game against University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) tonight at 7 p.m. at Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. Tonight’s game, in fact, will honor all first responders and members of the military by offering free admission to the game.

Abby, who played and later coached soccer, lacrosse, basketball and softball for Detroit Mercy earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in intelligence analysis. She credits the skills she learned in class with preparing her for the Detroit Police Department and, ultimately, helping that man. Read the entire story here.

“I love Detroit because I’m a Titan,” she told the reporter. My heart is here, and I’m fortunate to have a job here.”

Nice work, Abby.
