{"id":1260,"date":"2018-01-11T13:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T18:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/?p=1260"},"modified":"2018-01-10T15:55:31","modified_gmt":"2018-01-10T20:55:31","slug":"1260","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2018\/01\/11\/1260\/","title":{"rendered":"ReBUILDetroit students earn top awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 15 ReBUILDetroit scholars attended in the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), one of the largest communities of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ReBUILDetroit is funded by a $21-million grant from the National Institutes of Health to increase diversity in the biomedical research field. The funds were granted to a consortium headed by Detroit Mercy that includes Wayne State University and Marygrove College.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the scholars were recognized for their outstanding presentations in the categories: cancer biology and physiology.<\/p>\n<p>For Jada Nelson, ReBUILDetroit scholar from University of Detroit Mercy and a winner in the cancer biology category for outstanding presentation, the conference strengthened her confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave you a perspective, yes, I can do this,\u201d exclaimed Nelson.&nbsp; \u201cThere were others like me doing the same thing.
