Mathis &#8217;88"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, University of Detroit Mercy honors seven alumni \u2014 one from each of the colleges and schools at the University \u2014 with a Spirit of Detroit Mercy award.<\/p>\n<p>These honorees are alumni who have marked themselves with distinction in their career and in their personal life. They will be honored at a special ceremony on April 27 on the McNichols Campus. Mathis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, we introduce our final honoree, from Detroit Mercy Law, the Hon. Gregory E. Mathis &#8217;88. We\u2019ve already written about the honorees from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2018\/03\/16\/meet-our-2018-alumni-spirit-honorees-john-m-everly-cba\/\">College of Business Administration<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2018\/03\/19\/meet-our-2018-alumni-spirit-honorees-randal-t-murphy-ces\/\">College of Engineering &amp; Science<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2018\/03\/23\/meet-our-2018-spirit-award-honorees-david-f-claeys-chpmson\/\">College of Health Professions<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2018\/03\/26\/meet-our-2018-spirit-award-honorees-thomas-e-page-clae\/\">College of Liberal Arts &amp; Education<\/a>, the School of Architecture and Detroit Mercy Dental.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Greg Mathis is a familiar face across this country thanks to his syndicated courtroom reality series \u201cThe Judge Mathis Show.\u201d He is also devoted to social justice, having opened a community center in Detroit that, in partnership with his nonprofit agency Young Adults Asserting Themselves, has helped thousands of young people with career, business start-up and job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>He has long blended career with public service, having worked for the Detroit City Council and Rev. Jesse Jackson\u2019s PUSH Excel, and for four years was a District Court Judge. He has served on the national board of the NAACP and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
