Garibaldi on Monday, Nov. 16, for the official groundbreaking celebration of the expansive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/udmercy.edu\/admission\/renovations.php\">McNichols Campus Renovation Project<\/a> announced in February.<\/p>\n<p>Garibaldi welcomed the small crowd that had gathered for this event and explained that the renovation of the Student Union, \u201cis only one-third of a multi-phase, multi-million-dollar renovation to this McNichols Campus and is consistent with our long-range master plan, which is laser-focused on improving student satisfaction in all of our facilities, attracting and retaining more students and using University resources efficiently and effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike McNamara, chairman of the University Board of Trustees and president of Hollingsworth, agreed. \u201cThis\u00a0new student union will be a critical hub of activity for our entire campus and most importantly for students.\u00a0Originally\u00a0built in 1955 and expanded in 1970, today\u2019s\u00a0groundbreaking\u00a0and renovation will place\u00a0the facility at the center of student life on\u00a0the McNichols Campus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dignitaries in attendance at the ground breaking included Steve Kassab, founder of Kasco Construction, which will perform the work; Mike Engle, executive vice president of Kasco Construction; Rainy Hamilton \u201978, \u201979 of Hamilton Anderson Associates, the architectural firm for the project; District 2 City Councilman Roy McAlister Jr.; and Live 6 Alliance Executive Director Geneva Williams.<\/p>\n<p>The project starts with this renovation and expansion of the Student Union, followed by the eventual demolition of the University\u2019s Fisher Administration Center and Reno Hall. In addition to upgrades to academic buildings, administrative space and residence halls, the multi-phase plan includes new on-campus student apartments, green space on newly acquired land and a Center for Excellence in Teaching &amp; Learning, among other projects.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of the challenges communities and organizations across the world have faced in 2020, this groundbreaking represents another milestone in the University\u2019s history. This past year, the institution was honored once again with high national rankings by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em> and <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, among others. In addition, Detroit Mercy announced in October<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/2020\/10\/07\/university-of-detroit-mercy-announces-a-new-campus-expansion-in-novi\/\"> a new campus in Novi.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Community leaders, members of the Detroit Mercy community and news media joined President Antoine M.
