\"SilveiraTo mark the graduation of the Class of 2022, we are profiling several students who were nominated by staff and faculty for their contributions to the University and their potential to make a difference after graduation.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Joseph <\/span>Silveira<\/span> has always been interested in<\/span> what makes buildings special<\/span>; <\/span>in fact, <\/span>it\u2019s what brought him to Detr<\/span>oit Mercy.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
After studying engineering at various colleges and universities <\/span>from<\/span> Michigan <\/span>to<\/span> Florida, <\/span>Silveira<\/span> left <\/span>that discipline<\/span> to <\/span>earn a master\u2019s degree in <\/span>A<\/span>rchitecture<\/span> at Detroit Mercy\u2019s <\/span>School <\/span>of Architecture <\/span>&<\/span> Community Design<\/span> (SACD)<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span>t was not an easy decision.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThere was a very difficult moment where I spent the whole day thinking about a specific building. It was then when I realized I couldn\u2019t keep doing engineering while having whimsical<\/span>,<\/span> dreamy thoughts about buildings,\u201d <\/span>Silveira<\/span> said. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Silveira<\/span> was introduced to architecture while working on his undergraduate degree in Florida, but chose to attend Detroit Mercy for <\/span>its<\/span> community-oriented approach to architecture.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cDespite architecture being a<\/span> fairly<\/span> uniform practice, each school has a pedagogy,\u201d <\/span>Silveira<\/span> said.<\/span> \u201cDetroit Mercy is aimed toward public interest design, which focuses on the stakeholders, rather than the new-urbanism taught at other universities that is aimed toward pleasing a client.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
What interested <\/span>Silveira<\/span> when he came to study at Detroit Mercy was designing \u201cfrom a perspective of sympathy, and understanding of the building\u2019s users rather than the building\u2019s owners.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
He<\/span> also felt supported <\/span>in exploring<\/span> these topics by the faculty at Detroit Mercy. <\/span>He said<\/span> they were always around to answer questions, or explore new and exciting architectural concepts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s one of those things where you get these really wonderful faculty members who get as excited as you about the subject matter<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d Silveira said.<\/span> \u201cA<\/span>nd<\/span> you don\u2019t feel as if you are bothering them by asking questions or starting a tangential conversation<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
He<\/span> said that he did not experience the anxiety and burn out <\/span>at<\/span> Detroit Mercy that he experienced at other times in his education<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>credits <\/span>that<\/span> to the connections he and his classmates have with the faculty at their school.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cI always felt like I was on pins and needles at my other programs<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>There was more anxiety on projects and more burnou<\/span>t<\/span>. One thing about Detroit Mercy is that <\/span>the<\/span> faculty members are going to see you as a real human being<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Silveira<\/span> said he felt supported by his professors to <\/span>dive into<\/span> unique topics he would not necessarily <\/span>have <\/span>been able to at other programs.<\/span> He<\/span> enjoyed sharing his passion for architecture with<\/span> Professor <\/span>Allegra <\/span>Pitera<\/span>, whose history and theory classes pushed him to consider how a building evokes moods and feelings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cMany students get into a bind with materials and realistic objectives, but don\u2019t think about emotional feelings as an objective. <\/span>I like that her thinking doesn\u2019t fit into these pedagogical norms,\u201d <\/span>Silveira<\/span> said. \u201cI also liked exploring ideas with <\/span>Professor<\/span> Wladek<\/span> Fuchs. He\u2019s definitely a guy you can sit down and talk with, and he gives you a lot of freedom to do your own thing.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Silveira<\/span> also connected with <\/span>Associate <\/span>Professor Erika Lindsay, whose classes on memory helped him think differently about the impact society has with regard to decay and erosion of buildings, and the \u201ccollective memory of a space.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
He<\/span> was also impressed with how involved the master\u2019s students were in the undergraduate program. As a master\u2019s student he was asked to participate in undergraduate critiques, something that would not happen at most programs. <\/span>Silveira<\/span> feels that bringing the undergraduate and master\u2019s level programs together fosters community within the college.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Seeking a way to become more involved with the student body, <\/span>Silveira<\/span> worked with<\/span> <\/span>Dichotomy<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>SACD\u2019s<\/span> academic journal<\/span>. He first <\/span>encountered<\/span> as an undergraduate, and <\/span>found it<\/span> interesting. <\/span>He joined the magazine to improve his writing skills while preparing to <\/span>draft <\/span>his thesis.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The<\/span> magazine was going through a tough time when he got onboard.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhen I picked it up<\/span>,<\/span> it was about the execution of a journal that was started but not finished due to the COVID pandemic<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>COVID made it very difficult. We had to basically restart.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Silveira worked with a smaller-than-normal staff to complete the issue and enjoyed the work and the opportunity to learn about \u201cthe nature of what it takes to publish, and work through a student publication.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
All this has helped shape <\/span>Silveira<\/span> as an architect<\/span> and his search for employment<\/span>, he said<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cArchitecture should exist as a common good practice,\u201d he said<\/span>, adding that he was inspired by the Detroit Collaborative Design Center <\/span>(<\/span>DCDC<\/span>)<\/span>, a nationally award-winning practice that puts the community at the center of design.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cI think to have a program where the faculty is approachable, and their values are not in line with this corporate scholastic nature, and instead are interested in human experiences and humans in general helped me more forward from my other programs,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ve helped me become the architect I want to be.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
