When Mehar Soni gives her valedictorian speech at University of Detroit Mercy\u2019s 2022 commencement ceremony May 14, she\u2019ll look into the crowd, reflect on her three years at the University and acknowledge all the people who have impacted her.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of those people is her grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soni, who is graduating\u00a0<\/span>with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Chemistry and a\u00a0<\/span>minor in\u00a0<\/span>Literature<\/span>, grew up listening to her grandmother\u2019s stories and being read to. Quality time with her grandmother as a child had a big impact on the Detroit Mercy valedictorian\u2019s life, helping her\u00a0<\/span>develop a love for literature.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a way for me to connect with her and her stories,\u201d Soni said. \u201cShe would tell me about India, she would tell me about how she immigrated here and\u00a0<\/span>how\u00a0<\/span>it was so difficult to mesh into society. Being a child and just spending time with your grandparents through stories and books was very valuable to me. I was always drawn to listening and reading because of that reason.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soni came to Detroit Mercy to follow her\u00a0<\/span>dream<\/span>\u00a0of becoming a dentist<\/span>\u00a0as part of the\u00a0<\/span>7-Year Dental program<\/span>. But literature first sparked the Hamilton, Ontario, native’s interest in science and medicine at an early age.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soni was influenced by her grandmother who helped her develop a love for literature.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Soni says she was\u00a0<\/span>about 6 years old\u00a0<\/span>when she grabbed an interactive biology book off the lowest shelf at her library.\u00a0<\/span>Fascinated, s<\/span>he renewed the book,<\/span>\u00a0which detailed the human body,<\/span>\u00a0\u201cso many times.\u201d Volunteering at the cancer hospital where her grandmother was a patient, as well as conversations with her dentist, helped solidify dentistry as Soni\u2019s medical path.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI shadowed and realized dentistry had the personal element of connecting with patients,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t have to deal with severe illness and I can really be involved with patients\u2019 lives. I can also work with my hands to create art and do good.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soni chose to attend Detroit Mercy for a variety of reasons. Her dentist<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a graduate of the University<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>first\u00a0<\/span>recommended\u00a0<\/span>its 7<\/span>–<\/span>Year\u00a0<\/span>Dental\u00a0<\/span>program<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>ut what set Detroit Mercy apart was the institution\u2019s values and community. Soni enjoyed developing relationships with\u00a0<\/span>College<\/span>\u00a0of Engineering & Science Assistant Dean for Academics and Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Elizabeth Roberts-Kirchhoff<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0as well as the\u00a0<\/span>Chair and Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Matthew Mio<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0while touring the McNichols Campus.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI already felt like I had belonged, even though I was in high school,\u201d Soni said. \u201cI felt like this is such a natural place for me to go, I already feel like a member of the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although it took some time for Soni to find her place on the McNichols Campus, she feels she was able to grow at the University and became quite involved as her undergraduate career progressed. Her roles included serving as the Chemistry Club\u2019s vice president of speakers and tours, a content editor for the student arts journal [sic] and working as an ambassador for the 7-Year Dental program. She also did research with Detroit Mercy faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think the most important thing I\u2019ve learned at Detroit Mercy is the power of community and family,\u201d Soni reflected. \u201cCollege isn\u2019t all about getting good grades \u2013 that’s the mistake I was making in my first year. I thought I could just come, get As and go back home. But that\u2019s not what it\u2019s about, that\u2019s not what this University is about. They want you to be involved on campus, to meet people, faculty, find mentors and friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was also important for Soni to give back to others through volunteering, a trait instilled in her at an early age by her grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe come from a community where not a lot of people had a lot of opportunities,\u201d Soni said. \u201cBeing a person of color and being in a new country, my parents really had to struggle to get everything that they had. My grandmother always said ‘you have the privilege of going to a wonderful institution, you should always incorporate giving back in every stage of your life.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative outlets led to memorable experiences for Soni at Detroit Mercy. This spring, she won the annual Dudley Randall poetry contest with her submission \u201cThe Crown Jewel,\u201d a personal poem she says is about her family and background. The piano in the University\u2019s St. Ignatius Chapel also brought great joy to Soni, who started playing when she was 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spent so many hours playing it between the services that are there,\u201d she said. \u201cThe room is just beautiful. The stained-glass windows and the light coming into the room, it\u2019s kind of my happy place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The hard work and discipline it took for Soni to play the piano at a high level is something she uses in all areas of her life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t immediately play something perfectly; it took hours and hours of dedication, questioning and listening to other people play the song,\u201d Soni said. \u201cSome people have a natural talent for music, but personally, I don\u2019t. It took a lot of effort to get to where I am today. And that has carried into every aspect of my life. When I go to school, I don\u2019t just go and take notes. I take detailed notes, I ask questions, I go to office hours. I question everything I learn because of music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The next step in Soni\u2019s educational career is dental school, which she will start this fall at the University of Pennsylvania. There, she is eager to explore a passion she discovered at Detroit Mercy through literature: narrative medicine. Soni worked with Associate Professor of English\u00a0<\/span>Rosemary Weatherston<\/a>, who teaches a narrative medicine course at the University, to research chemistry in narrative medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt involves understanding the stories of illness instead of just the medical symptoms and scientific aspect,\u201d Soni said. \u201cReally understanding that illness is a narrative; it\u2019s a very big part of who you are.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soni fulfilled a longtime dream by becoming Detroit Mercy\u2019s valedictorian. Despite being sick with COVID during the\u00a0<\/span>application\u00a0<\/span>process, she\u00a0<\/span>earned<\/span>\u00a0the coveted distinction<\/span>, following in the footsteps of her friend\u00a0<\/span>Nurzahan<\/span>\u00a0Rahman<\/span><\/a>, who was the University\u2019s valedictorian last year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When Soni steps on the Calihan Hall stage to give her speech on Saturday, she\u2019ll reflect on her three years at Detroit Mercy and deliver messages of hope for her fellow Titans. She\u2019ll talk about the friends, mentors, faculty and alumni who have influenced her, as well as how becoming involved on the McNichols Campus impacted her life.<\/span><\/p>\n

More importantly, Soni will thank her family, who accompanied her along her journey from its start.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy family was just really proud, because they just didn\u2019t expect something like this to happen,\u201d Soni said. \u201cI\u2019m the oldest child in my family, my dad never had these kinds of opportunities that I\u2019ve had. He\u2019s just really proud that I could make the best of them. It\u2019s just unreal. My grandma\u2019s the most proud, though.<\/span><\/p>\n
