Each year, University of Detroit Mercy chooses an alumnus from each of its Colleges or Schools to honor as someone who has excelled in his or her profession, demonstrated outstanding leadership in work and devoted himself or herself in service to the larger community. Award recipients reflect the University\u2019s mission of excellence and service and bring pride to their alma mater. This year, the University will celebrate seven honorees at a special ceremony Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Ballroom of the Student Union on the McNichols Campus. This year, the School of Dentistry honors Cheri Newman \u201989, \u201990, \u201998<\/span>, adjunct professor (Ret.) Detroit Mercy Dental.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"CheriNewman is a three-time graduate of Detroit Mercy Dental, having earned a bachelor of science in Dental Hygiene then returning later to earn a DDS. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She has worked in private practice at Village Place Dental and her own practice and is an adjunct faculty member at Detroit Mercy Dental.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman\u2019s work focuses on dental services for special needs patients and she coordinates a clinic for these unique patients every week at Detroit Mercy Dental. Each year, she runs a weeklong outreach program to provide dental services for disabled adults at Bay Cliff Health Camp, which helps people with disabilities achieve greater independence. Her inclusion of Detroit Mercy Dental students in this community service is both meaningful and educational.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman is a past president of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international honorary dental service organization founded in 1936 and is a member or board member of many local and national dental organizations. She also is active in her community and church and enjoys biking, kayaking and traveling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
