I keep his index behind my desk because I use it so often.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fr. Edward Dowling, S.J., an Engineering professor at University of Detroit for decades, kept an expansive, in-depth and world-famous maritime collection of Great Lakes ships. It\u2019s one of the premier collections of Great Lakes ship history in the Midwest, right on Detroit Mercy\u2019s McNichols campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dowling\u2019s collection is well over 50,000 photographs and includes many other pieces, such as reference works, prospective drawings, postcards, ship models, books, journals, negatives and paintings, many of them by Dowling, who was an accomplished painter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The collection currently resides in the Archives Research Center, on the second floor of the McNichols Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7933\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=289%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Matthew Daley\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=289%2C300&amp;ssl=1 289w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=987%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 987w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=193%2C200&amp;ssl=1 193w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=768%2C797&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?resize=241%2C250&amp;ssl=1 241w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/Matthew-Daley.jpeg?w=1037&amp;ssl=1 1037w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Matthew Daley \u201997 has worked with the collection ever since first stepping foot onto the campus as an undergraduate student in 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Daley found a job as a work-study student at the library his freshman year and quickly found himself immersed in Fr. Dowling\u2019s maritime collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat was really funny was I got interviewed by a gentleman, Bill McElhone, and on the second day, he said, \u2018You don\u2019t know anything about ships, do you, and a guy named Father Dowling?\u2019\u201d Daley recalled. \u201cI loved Great Lakes ships and I said, \u2018Yeah, I know Father Dowling and I\u2019m hoping to meet him on campus.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBill said, \u2018Oh good, Father Dowling is bringing all of his stuff here and I don\u2019t know anything about it.\u2019 That was in September of 1993, and I\u2019ve worked with the collection ever since.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Daley had the good fortune of working with Dowling up until his passing in 1996. Knowing his idiosyncrasies has also assisted Daley in combing through his collection from the start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of the challenges with Dowling\u2019s collection is that it\u2019s organized for him,\u201d Daley said. \u201cThese ships on the Great Lakes last a long time, it\u2019s fresh water and they don\u2019t rot out like out on the ocean. They change names a lot. They\u2019re like playing cards, they get traded and they\u2019ll have five names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe scattered them all through the folders by fleet and you had to figure out where it was. He had these binders and I said, \u2018Father, there\u2019s no index,\u2019 and he would say \u2018Well, I know where they are.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m the one that has to find this stuff,\u201d Daley joked. \u201cSo, he created this huge binder and just went through by brute memory and there\u2019s gaps, but that\u2019s been the master control system and most of it is done now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Daley, who teaches Great Lakes and Michigan history at Grand Valley State University and serves on the international board for the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, has deep knowledge of Dowling and how he fell in love with collecting maritime artifacts of the Great Lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dowling grew up near the harbor in Chicago in the early 1900s. He had terrible allergies, so his family would take him on ships up Lake Michigan because there his hay fever would abate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He joined the priesthood and earned a degree from Loyola University Chicago and later was ordained at St. Louis University. In 1940, Dowling was brought to University of Detroit \u201cpartially because of the ramp up for the war effort\u201d to teach engineering graphics in the College of Engineering and continued to teach at the University well into the 1970s. He also served as University Archivist for 20 years before retiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI don\u2019t think people would call him a brilliant, masterpiece artist, but he was a regional artist of note because most people did not paint in his medium or the ships,\u201d Daley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-7934\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1.jpeg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A collection of photos from the collection\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=2048%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=375%2C250&amp;ssl=1 375w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/11\/dowling-1-scaled.jpeg?w=2498&amp;ssl=1 2498w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>The collection is also significant due to the kind of pictures he kept, such as a World War I ship called a Laker, early steel ships called Whalebacks and many historical pictures of Great Lakes harbors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Daley, who was hired by former Library Dean Margaret Auer while still a student and worked with the University\u2019s Archives well in the 2000s prior to joining GVSU, has a unique perspective because he\u2019s worked with some of the largest Great Lakes maritime collections in the Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to Dowling\u2019s expansive collection, Daley earned his Ph.D. in History at Bowling Green in Ohio, which houses the largest collection of Great Lakes history, and spent time at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in Detroit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think that it was a real stroke that Margaret Auer was able to gain the collection for the library and the legacy of Father Dowling, he is a very noted figure,\u201d Daley said. \u201cIf you go to most maritime history books you will find Dowling images scattered throughout there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The collection has now become part of the legacy at the University, helping preserve and extend one man\u2019s lifelong passion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think that this is a collection that will live on,\u201d Daley reflected. \u201cDozens of students have worked on it. It\u2019s been a big part of my own career, as well. I\u2019ve been working on it for 29 years now. The library has this sort of facility for it. The Jesuit community has also really cared for the paintings that they have and have made them significant and made them a great supporter of the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great memory of Father Dowling and of a person who spent so much of his life here at the University.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">View Fr.
