It\u00a0was proof that\u00a0remarkable breakthroughs happen\u00a0at the crossroads of\u00a0science and art.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0three\u00a0students\u00a0met in a\u00a0freshman\u00a0general chemistry lab, where\u00a0they\u00a0later\u00a0joined\u00a0Professor of Chemistry Mark Benvenuto\u2019s\u00a0long-running\u00a0research\u00a0on low-temperature metal casting. This research focuses on\u00a0a\u00a0process where molten metal\u00a0is poured into a mold to create a solid shape as the metal cools and solidifies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Student research at UDM<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One big advantage for these students,\u00a0and\u00a0others\u00a0at UDM,\u00a0is they have a chance\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0with\u00a0faculty mentors\u00a0on\u00a0hands-on\u00a0research projects\u00a0as part of the College of Engineering &amp; Science\u2019s undergraduate research program.\u00a0Benvenuto\u2019s metal casting research\u00a0not only taught the\u00a0students\u00a0to\u00a0think critically\u00a0and\u00a0solve problems\u00a0but also\u00a0to use their imagination. The experience\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0how curiosity,\u00a0creativity\u00a0and\u00a0teamwork\u00a0drive innovation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8619\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2025\/12\/fidem-side-4.jpg?resize=300%2C416&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A hot plate with molten metal.\" width=\"300\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2025\/12\/fidem-side-4.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2025\/12\/fidem-side-4.jpg?resize=216%2C300&amp;ssl=1 216w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2025\/12\/fidem-side-4.jpg?resize=144%2C200&amp;ssl=1 144w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.udmercy.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2025\/12\/fidem-side-4.jpg?resize=180%2C250&amp;ssl=1 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Benvenuto, who has taught introductory chemistry for\u00a0years, said the project began with a simple idea:\u00a0Expose\u00a0students to metal chemistry using only the heat of a hot plate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYoung scientists, who want to be doctors, dentists, engineers, all of them,\u00a0need to understand\u00a0a bit about metal chemistry because sometimes you put metal teeth into people, sometimes you put metal hip joints into people,\u201d he explained.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBut when you give students a graphite block and\u00a0say,\u00a0\u2018Use your imagination,\u2019\u00a0they\u00a0come up with\u00a0some amazing stuff and\u00a0shock themselves with what they can create.\u00a0They\u2019ve\u00a0seen everything online, but they\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">done<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0everything,\u201d he continued.\u00a0\u201cAnd doing the work,\u00a0melting,\u00a0pouring, carving, making mistakes, that\u2019s where the learning happens.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His philosophy has become\u00a0something of a guiding principle in the lab where he wants students to explore,\u00a0fail\u00a0and try again. \u201cI\u00a0tell students, if\u00a0you do something\u00a0\u2018wrong,\u2019\u00a0it\u2019s not wrong\u00a0if we learn from it,\u201d he\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cMake a mistake. Have some fun. Screw it up. Throw it on the floor.\u00a0We&#8217;ll\u00a0scrape it up and use it again.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learning by doing<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Detroit Mercy\u00a0students\u2019 research explored\u00a0new\u00a0methods for creating\u00a0art\u00a0medals\u00a0from molds\u00a0by combining different metals\u00a0and\u00a0alloys in varying ratios\u00a0and noting the\u00a0eutectic\u00a0(melting)\u00a0point\u00a0of these mixtures.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They experimented with\u00a0mixing\u00a0low-melting alloys such as bismuth,\u00a0tin\u00a0and Wood\u2019s\u00a0metal, which in combination\u00a0have low\u00a0eutectic\u00a0points.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The goal was to\u00a0observe\u00a0how these combinations affect properties such as shine,\u00a0texture\u00a0and\u00a0eutectic\u00a0point, all\u00a0below the\u00a0500-degrees-Celsius\u00a0limit\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0hot plate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building on\u00a0previous\u00a0work with graphite molds,\u00a0which\u00a0the students\u00a0carved with hand tools\u00a0or drills\u00a0for\u00a0fine detail\u00a0before pouring\u00a0in\u00a0the molten metal,\u00a0the team\u00a0explored\u00a0new\u00a0techniques\u00a0with\u00a0different types\u00a0of molds:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" the\u00a0medal-making\u00a0process significantly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One\u00a0well-respected\u00a0FIDEM\u00a0artist, retired\u00a0Royal\u00a0Canadian\u00a0Mint engraver Susan Taylor\u00a0\u201ctold\u00a0me, \u2018Yeah, it may seem simple, but you&#8217;ve\u00a0reduced a process that normally takes weeks in a foundry to\u00a0just one\u00a0afternoon,\u2019\u201d Benvenuto said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The students\u00a0give Benvenuto a great deal of credit\u00a0for\u00a0their success\u00a0at FIDEM\u00a0and for his\u00a0mentorship and unwavering support, which\u00a0encouraged them\u00a0to\u00a0innovate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Props for \u2018Dr. B\u2019<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span Benvenuto\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0faculty-mentored\u00a0project on\u00a0eco-friendly dental\u00a0supplies prior to joining the metal-casting research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMany professors set strict research agendas and deadlines, but\u00a0Dr. B\u00a0lets us choose the direction of our research,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThat freedom\u00a0makes the\u00a0work\u00a0meaningful. If I were stuck working on something I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0care about, it would feel empty.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of the practical skills\u00a0the students\u00a0developed out of their research\u00a0include\u00a0carving, drilling and precision pouring,\u00a0which\u00a0sharpened\u00a0manual dexterity,\u00a0skillsets\u00a0needed for\u00a0future dental work.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another\u00a0important feature\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0students\u2019\u00a0research\u00a0is accessibility. With a hot plate,\u00a0an aluminum dish or kinetic sand,\u00a0metal casting can be done\u00a0at low cost,\u00a0an idea that resonated with the international crowd\u00a0at FIDEM.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The road to Munich was a bit of a climb\u00a0for these innovative student researchers.\u00a0Acceptance to FIDEM required them to\u00a0mail their medals for review\u00a0and\u00a0submit\u00a0presentation materials months in advance.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0obtaining the\u00a0funding\u00a0to attend the conference\u00a0was more of an uphill battle.\u00a0School-hosted crowdfunding, a GoFundMe campaign and\u00a0a\u00a0lastminute\u00a0boost when Benvenuto reached out to alumni,\u00a0who contributed hundreds of dollars each, covered the\u00a0cost of\u00a0flights and hotels for the three-student team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Song, a\u00a0senior international student from Korea, who\u00a0came across this research\u00a0during a\u00a0freshman\u00a0extra-credit assignment, said this experience\u00a0would not have been possible without Benvenuto and the support of UDM alumni.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHonestly, 80% of what we accomplished was because of\u00a0Dr. B\u2019s\u00a0guidance and support,\u201d she said. \u201cHe opened doors to opportunities most students never get, and that means so much to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because of her experience,\u00a0Song plans to pay it forward someday.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf he reaches out years from now, I want to be one of the alumni who can give back, because\u00a0this is an experience that\u00a0I will never forget,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Respect and growth<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Presenting at FIDEM was both exhilarating and intimidating for the trio, but the students found\u00a0they were\u00a0welcomed as\u00a0peers.\u00a0They fielded\u00a0so many questions\u00a0after their presentations\u00a0that the conversations\u00a0extended\u00a0well\u00a0beyond the session\u00a0times.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe never felt out of place,\u00a0even though people were impressed by our\u00a0ideas. They offered advice but also asked for our input on their own\u00a0work. It felt like we\u00a0were\u00a0colleagues,\u201d said Haisha.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During\u00a0this\u00a0give-and-take,\u00a0the\u00a0students\u00a0traded\u00a0techniques with artists, a Tokyo-based jeweler-professor and\u00a0Taylor, the\u00a0retired\u00a0Royal Canadian\u00a0Mint\u00a0senior\u00a0engraver in attendance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen someone of Susan Taylor\u2019s\u00a0magnitude asks questions about your work and tells you it\u2019s good, that\u2019s life-changing,\u201d Benvenuto said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Song\u00a0reflected\u00a0that\u00a0her research\u00a0had\u00a0rekindled her deep connection to art, a connection that\u00a0had faded under the weight of\u00a0a schedule dominated by science\u00a0and\u00a0academic\u00a0study.\u00a0Surrounded\u00a0by\u00a0enthusiastic\u00a0artists\u00a0at the conference, she\u00a0realized how vital creativity is to her.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cArt has always fueled my heart,\u201d she explained, noting that the experience reminded her\u00a0of the\u00a0need for\u00a0\u201cbeauty, spontaneity and\u00a0excitement\u201d\u00a0alongside\u00a0logic and\u00a0structure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Benvenuto\u00a0believes there is a\u00a0natural connection between science and art.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf you take 100 young people who all want to be doctors or dentists, about 25 of them are naturally gifted artists,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cBut\u00a0often,\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0been told they\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0make a living that way, so they pursue science instead. This project gave the\u00a0students\u00a0a chance to\u00a0reconnect with\u00a0their\u00a0creative sides.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lessons from the experience<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The students\u00a0experienced\u00a0some\u00a0failures along the way. But as Nistor noted, each one\u00a0became a part of the learning\u00a0process\u00a0and that\u00a0expertise\u00a0does not happen overnight.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEach mistake taught us something, and we kept\u00a0mixing,\u00a0pouring\u00a0and carving\u00a0until\u00a0we got better\u00a0at it,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Haisha\u00a0agreed, adding,\u00a0\u201cFor me, this\u00a0research\u00a0was something I\u00a0truly cared\u00a0about. It\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0easy, and balancing it with classes was challenging,\u00a0but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0why it matters. I always tell other students, only\u00a0do\u00a0research that excites you;\u00a0if you love what\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0doing, the extra work is worth it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For\u00a0Haisha,\u00a0representing\u00a0UDM\u00a0in Munich was an honor.\u00a0\u201cI really wanted to\u00a0represent\u00a0Detroit Mercy\u00a0with\u00a0my head held high,\u00a0though\u00a0I was\u00a0a little\u00a0intimidated\u00a0because of our ages. But I feel like we\u00a0represented\u00a0UDM\u00a0in the best way,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In conversations with European peers\u00a0at the conference, the students learned that undergraduate research\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0the norm abroad,\u00a0where it\u00a0begins\u00a0at the Ph.D. level.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMany of them were surprised to learn\u00a0that research opportunities can begin in your freshman year at Detroit Mercy\u2014they kept asking us the name of our school,\u201d\u00a0said Nistor. \u201cI think this sets\u00a0the University\u00a0apart.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This\u00a0underscored the distinctiveness of Detroit Mercy\u2019s\u00a0\u201clearning through discovery\u201d\u00a0model that not only builds technical skill but also\u00a0inspires\u00a0students to blend creativity with science,\u00a0paving the way for futures as innovators, thought leaders, and educators.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nistor\u00a0added\u00a0that\u00a0though\u00a0chemistry research of this nature is\u00a0somewhat outside\u00a0the traditional approach of biology students,\u00a0it\u00a0highlighted the importance of\u00a0connecting\u00a0art and science.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMany of the artists at the conference have been doing medal artwork before we were even born,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were impressed and intrigued by the methods we
