Gargaro, Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every year the Detroit Free Press names several honorees of its Shining Light Awards, this year, one went to an alumnus who exemplifies regional leadership: Eugene A. Gargaro, Jr. &#8217;67.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the Detroit Institute of Arts, he led the DIA through a scary time from which it emerged more stable than before. His nomination form says Gargaro&#8217;s&nbsp;&#8220;philanthropy is often guided by his belief in arts and culture as a great unifier, one that links together individuals of all races, religions&nbsp;and cultures. His tireless efforts in the civic, community and education realm exemplify the true meaning of &#8216;servant leader.&#8217; &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That &#8220;servant leadership&#8221; is a hallmark of a Jesuit and Mercy education; Gargaro earned his J.D. from the Law School, where he also led a fundraising effort.
