Eugene A. Gargaro, Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Every year the Detroit Free Press names several honorees of its Shining Light Awards, this year, one went to an alumnus who exemplifies regional leadership: Eugene A. Gargaro, Jr. ’67.<\/p>\n

The chairman of the Detroit Institute of Arts, he led the DIA through a scary time from which it emerged more stable than before. His nomination form says Gargaro’s “philanthropy is often guided by his belief in arts and culture as a great unifier, one that links together individuals of all races, religions and cultures. His tireless efforts in the civic, community and education realm exemplify the true meaning of ‘servant leader.’ ”<\/p>\n

That “servant leadership” is a hallmark of a Jesuit and Mercy education; Gargaro earned his J.D. from the Law School, where he also led a fundraising effort. In 2016, the University named Gargaro a Spirit of Detroit Mercy Alumni Achievement Award honoree.<\/p>\n
