\"\"It’s been a good week for Detroit Mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n

First there was the news of our increased enrollment<\/a>, then we received high rankings<\/a> from U.S. News & World Report. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

But just before all that news happened, we learned we were selected to receive a U.S. Department of Education Upward Bound grant of $1.3 million over five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The University\u2019s first-ever Upward Bound grant will assist 60 students annually from two high schools of the Detroit Community Public Schools to prepare for college. The nationally-recognized federal program began in 1965 to increase the college opportunities of varied groups of secondary students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students in grades 9 through 11 from Osborn High School and the Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men will be chosen to participate. The schools were selected based on their location and the percentage of students eligible for the program.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the school year, participants will have weekly instructional contact with certified teachers and peer coaches\/tutors. In the summer, students will participate in a six-week program that will give the students supplemental instruction in mathematics, laboratory science, foreign languages, composition and literature.<\/p>\n
