Traveling exhibit aims to end the silence that surrounds mental health and suicide

September is national Suicide Awareness Month, and to mark that, the Wellness Center and the Dean of Students Office will bring Active Minds’ Send Silence Packing Exhibit to the McNichols Campus on Thursday, Sept. 16.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day hundreds of backpacks representing those college students who have committed suicide will be exhibited in Sacred Heart Square. The exhibit includes personal stories of those who have lost a loved one to suicide and is designed to raise awareness of the impact of suicide, connect individuals to mental health resources and inspire action for suicide prevention. People may walk among the exhibit and see photographs and read stories attached to them. Many of the backpacks were donated by families who lost a loved one to suicide.
