SUMMARY:26th annual McElroy Lecture on Law and Religion
DESCRIPTION:The McElroy Lecture on Law and Religion provides a forum for pr
ominent thinkers to address fundamental issues of law and religion. The 26
th annual lecture is set for Thursday\, Oct. 23\, from 5-6 p.m. in Room 22
6 at the Riverfront Campus. A reception follows the lecture in the atrium.
\n\nThis year’s lecture\, titled “Next Steps for Church Autonomy” w
ill be presented by Stephanie Barclay\, professor of Law at Georgetown Un
iversity Law School and faculty co-director of the Georgetown Center for t
he Constitution. The annual McElroy Lecture is made possible through a beq
uest from Detroit Mercy Law alumnus Philip J. McElroy.\n\nThis lecture wil
l examine emerging frontiers in church autonomy jurisprudence across sever
al critical contexts:\n\n the doctrine's application as a defense to defa
mation suits arising from religious discipline\n tensions between ministe
rial exception principles and employment protections\n the use of collate
ral appeals to prevent process as punishment in autonomy disputes\n prope
r judicial deference to internal religious governance.\n\nThe lecture expl
ores potential doctrinal developments that would be important to both reli
gious liberty and individual rights while avoiding the constitutional haza
rds of excessive entanglement with religious affairs.\n\nBarclay's researc
h focuses on the role our different democratic institutions play in protec
ting minority rights\, particularly at the intersection of free speech and
religious exercise. Her work is published or is forthcoming in leading jo
urnals such as the Harvard Law Review\, the Chicago Law Review\, the Unive
rsity of Pennsylvania Law Review and the Yale Law Journal Forum. Barclay
is a faculty affiliate at the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law S
chool and a Nootbaar Fellow at the Nootbaar Institute on Law\, Religion\,
and Ethics at Pepperdine University.\nRegister here.
