SUMMARY:Constitution Day Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Black Abolitionist Archive\, along with the Departments of
History and Political Science and the McNichols Campus Library\, invite De
troit Mercy students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni and community members to j
oin us for our annual Constitution Day event on Tuesday\, Sept. 17 at noon
.\n\nThe event will be held in the Bargman Room\, located on the second fl
oor of the McNichols Campus Library. A limited number of light lunches wil
 l be provided on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and all are welcome.\
n\nThis year’s theme is “Freedom of Speech and the Constitution” and
features a presentation and conversation with Professor of History Roy E.
Finkenbine and Assistant Professor of Political Science Lee Dionne.\n\nSe
ptember 17 is officially Constitution Day and Citizenship Day\, so designa
ted by a joint resolution of the United States Congress to commemorate the
1787 signing of the United States Constitution on that date. Each educati
onal institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required
to hold an educational program on Constitution Day about the United State
s Constitution for its students.\n\nThe First Amendment of the United Stat
es Constitution protects\, among other freedoms\, the freedom of speech an
d states that Congress cannot make laws that limit freedom of speech. This
means that the government generally cannot punish people or organizations
for what they say or write\, unless in exceptional circumstances\, and Co
nstitution Day is a day to celebrate the document that protects these righ
ts.\n\nPlease join us for what will most likely be a spirited conversation
 !
