SUMMARY:DMTC presents Photograph 51
DESCRIPTION:Detroit Mercy Theatre Company (DMTC) presents the Michigan pre
miere of Photograph 51 by Anna Ziegler\, a captivating and thought-provo
king play that tells the story of unsung scientific hero Rosalind Franklin
\, at the Marlene Boll Theatre inside Detroit’s Boll Family YMCA.\n\nPho
tograph 51 runs six performances Friday through Sunday\, Feb. 9-11 and th
 e following weekend\, Friday through Sunday\, Feb. 16-18. All Friday and S
aturday shows are set for 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday performances are both a
t 3 p.m.\n\nSet in the 1950s\, the play explores the intense competition a
mong scientists as they race to unravel the secrets of the double helix st
ructure of DNA\, the biological organism containing each individual’s ge
netic code. At the heart of the story is Franklin\, a brilliant and determ
ined scientist whose work is overlooked and undervalued due to her gender.
\n\n“Rosalind’s passion to discover and seek out the unknown is famili
ar to me. Her fight and endurance in pursuit of a technological breakthrou
gh against cultural restraints and pressure teaches me\,” said director
Kennikki Jones-Jones. “I love that she is rooted in truth\, that she was
a real woman who walked this Earth\, and I am grateful that I get to shar
 e her story with the world.”\n\nWith wit and passion\, Photograph 51 t
akes the audience on a journey through the exhilarating and often treacher
ous world of scientific discovery and raises important questions about the
nature of scientific progress\, the role of women in science and the ethi
cs of scientific competition.\n\n“Although set in the 1950s\, the story
still resonates today\, especially as we see more and more women entering
STEM careers and fighting for the same understanding and recognition as th
eir male counterparts\,” said Andrew Papa\, chair of Detroit Mercy’s
Department of Performing Arts.\n\nWith wit and passion\, Photograph 51 t
