SUMMARY:Thomas Nail to speak on ‘The Birth of Order from Chaos: Perspecti
ves from Comparative World Mythology’ at Philosophy Department event
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Nail\, distinguished scholar and professor of Philosophy
at the University of Denver\, will be the guest speaker at a Philosophy D
epartment event on Thursday\, March 19\, at 10 a.m. in Loranger Architectu
re Building Exhibition Space.\n\nThe conversation explores the meaning of
the word ‘chaos\,’ from an immanent worldview where the oldest native
language cosmogonic texts say the cosmos was born from chaos. The followin
g questions will be discussed:\n\n Without direct contact between culture
s\, how was this possible?\n Why was this their shared conclusion?\n Whe
n and why did some humans begin to reject this account?\n\nDuring this lec
ture\, Nail will present a summary of his research on these questions and
others from his latest two unpublished books\, The Birth of Chaos and The
Birth of Order. His presentation will outline the common features of the w
orld’s oldest recorded cosmogonies and argue that they offer a compellin
 g movement-oriented alternative to post Axial-Age worldviews.\n\nThomas Na
il is the author of numerous books\, including The Figure of the Migrant\,
Theory of the Border\, Theory of the Earth\, Marx in Motion\, The Philoso
phy of Movement\, Lucretius I\, II\, III\, and Being and Motion. His resea
rch focuses on the philosophy of movement.\n\nAll are welcome to attend to
this free event.\n\nPlease contact Gail Presbey at presbegm@udmercy.edu w
ith any questions or for more information.
