Stephanie <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> \u201915 <\/span>has had many different <\/span>research <\/span>passions during a long career as an educator and veterinarian. Bu<\/span>t it was a course that she took earning her Health Services Administration certificate from <\/span>University of <\/span>Detroit Mercy <\/span>that helped push her in a new direction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> is among 1,100 people nationally who have been selected recipients of <\/span>the prestigious <\/span>Presidential Management Fellowship.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> took a class in population health from Detroit Mercy while earning her HSA certificate and shortly <\/span>after receiving her degree,<\/span> she pursued a Master of Public Health from Central Michigan University, graduating in 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Detroit Mercy\u2019s <\/span>Jesuit <\/span>and <\/span>Mercy vision inspired her to find new ways to provide service others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the first course outside of my veterinarian degree \u2014 <\/span>that led me into more of the side of the human perspective<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> and I think that kind of changed my path to a certain extent. It was pivotal,\u201d <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With her Detroit Mercy schooling, it also made the process of earning her MPH quicker, with some of the courses in the Health Services Administration track being similar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a prestigious two-year fellowship at a federal agency. Bearing the Presidential Seal, the <\/span>p<\/span>rogram is the federal government\u2019s flagship leadership development<\/span> program at the entry level for advanced degree holders.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For more than 40<\/span> years, the mission of the PMF Program has been to recruit and develop a cadre of future government leaders from all segments of society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> is <\/span>excited<\/span> to represent Detroit Mercy <\/span>as well as make a difference <\/span>with the <\/span>opportunity<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a finalist, she has 12 months to secure a full-time position with a federal agency<\/span> and has been applying to jobs through different government agencies, such as the CDC, USDA and others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019m hoping to promote the importance of public health, zoonotic disease prevention and just trying to make the world<\/span>,<\/span> or at least the United States<\/span>,<\/span> safer<\/span>, better and a healthier place for people as they live their lives,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Baiyas<\/span>i<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> recent research has centered around the One Health Initiative, which is a collaborative effort between physicians, veterinarians, nurses and other health and environmental related disciplines to achieve optimal health outcomes, recognizing the interconnectivity between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span> licensed veterinarian for more than three decades<\/span>, <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki says <\/span>it\u2019s an important research topic<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> surveyed veterinarians in Michigan <\/span>in regards to<\/span> how <\/span>they have encountered <\/span>zoonotic diseases, <\/span>ones that are transmitted from animals to humans, <\/span>whether by<\/span> themselves or by talking to their clients.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSixty-plus percent of diseases that humans get are originally from animals<\/span>,<\/span> so <\/span>preventing animal transmission of diseases from animals to humans would decrease the disease and pain and suffering of humans,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Her research was pivotal at the start of COVID-19 in early 2020 because it led to a conclusion that the promotion of the One Health would help bring human, veterinary and environmental science experts together to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Along with Detroit Mercy Associate Professor <\/span>Zigmond<\/span> Kozicki<\/span> and two HSA students, <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> helped provide important data of Michigan hospitals and public health agencies through an extensive study during the first year of COVID-19.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>public health<\/span> documentary on the COVID-19 <\/span>pandemic co-produced by <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> was presented at the American Public Health Association\u2019s Film Festival in October 2021. <\/span>It is<\/span> a<\/span> documentary that has<\/span> been used in <\/span>Detroit Mercy\u2019s <\/span>College of Health Professions & <\/span>McAuley<\/span> School of Nursing courses to <\/span>provide<\/span> insight <\/span>into<\/span> how public health is important to health services.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki\u2019s<\/span> research interests extend far beyond <\/span>z<\/span>oonotic disease prevention, however.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She <\/span>co-produced a movie<\/span> called <\/span><\/span>Saginaw Rising<\/span><\/span><\/em>, which examined the rising violence in<\/span> Saginaw<\/span> and offered solutions that led to federal Department of Justice grants to the city<\/span>. <\/span>A movie she co-produced with <\/span>Kozicki<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Great Lakes: One Water for Life<\/span><\/span><\/em>,<\/span> premier<\/span>ed<\/span> at Detroit Mercy on April 21,<\/span> during World Health Week.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She has\u00a0worked on programs <\/span>regarding<\/span> motor vehicle accident survivors<\/span> and has <\/span>participated<\/span> in<\/span> neuroscience research with Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span>, Huntington\u2019s <\/span>disease<\/span> and stroke<\/span> at Central Michigan<\/span>. <\/span>Baiyasi<\/span>-Kozicki<\/span> has also been an advocate for improving drinking water quality in the <\/span>United States.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a wide variety of interests,\u201d she said. \u201cI started working for Dow Corning in research areas since I was in high school and just enjoyed that work. To be on the <\/span>cutting<\/span> edge<\/span> of molecular biology, it was <\/span>phenomenal,<\/span> and I just remember loving that.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Her research prowess in many different areas and topics is something she brings to the table as she looks to land a position through the Presidential Management Fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFeeling like you are on the cutting edge and making a difference and discovering something new, it\u2019s always been so fascinating and interesting to me,\u201d Baiyasi-Kozicki said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Detroit Mercy\u2019s HSA program helped push her <\/span>to be<\/span> selected for the Presidential Management Fellowship.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Health Services Administration certificate really piqued my interest in getting back to furthering my degree,\u201d she said. \u201cI got a veterinarian degree in 1991 and was always taking courses in various things of interest, but not really leading up to something like a certificate that I got at Detroit Mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n
