{"id":12509,"date":"2022-12-09T16:13:41","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T21:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/campusconnection\/?p=12509"},"modified":"2022-12-12T12:27:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T17:27:34","slug":"detroit-mercy-theatre-company-continues-award-stream-with-antigone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/campusconnection\/2022\/12\/09\/detroit-mercy-theatre-company-continues-award-stream-with-antigone\/","title":{"rendered":"Detroit Mercy Theatre Company continues award stream with &#8216;Antigone&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/life\/theatre\/\">Detroit Mercy Theatre Company<\/a> (DMTC) is the recipient of two 2022 Wilde Awards for outstanding work on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAntigone\u201d won an award for Best Play and its director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/about\/people\/university\/clae\/performing-arts\/staff\/sarah-hawkins\">Sarah Hawkins Rusk<\/a>, scored a Best Director award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recognition is incredibly significant for our program and for our students,\u201d said Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/about\/people\/university\/clae\/performing-arts\/full-time-faculty\/gregory-grobis\">Greg Grobis<\/a>, managing director of the DMTC.\u00a0\u201cEncore Michigan only recognizes professional theatre companies. This elevates the caliber of our University productions to professional status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wilde Awards \u2013 named in honor of 19th Century playwright Oscar Wilde \u2013 recognizes the best productions, performances and technical work produced or presented by professional theaters across the state. Nominations are based on reviews written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encoremichigan.com\/\">EncoreMichigan.com<\/a>\u2019s team of professional critics.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the DMTC production of \u201cAntigone\u201d was awarded two national awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, an honor last achieved in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">In addition, the production received five commendations for work on the production:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">The company of Antigone for collaboration and also for achievement in representation, equity and diversity<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">Maritoni Harte for choreography<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_ContentPasted0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/about\/people\/university\/clae\/performing-arts\/full-time-faculty\/mary-valesano\">Mary Elizabeth Valesano<\/a> for costume design<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_ContentPasted0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/about\/people\/university\/clae\/performing-arts\/staff\/alan-devlin\">Alan Devlin<\/a> for scenic design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOur theatre model stresses collaboration and mentorship with professional artists is clearly a winning formula,\u201d said Grobis. \u201cWe are honored and humbled by these awards. And we are so excited for our students to receive this independent acknowledgement of their skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe College is thrilled for DMTC to receive these awards,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/about\/people\/university\/clae\/admin\/jocelyn-boryczka\">Jocelyn Boryczka<\/a>, dean of the College of Liberal Arts &amp; Education. \u201cTheatre is central to the Liberal Arts. It draws on our fields of study \u2014 in this case philosophy, history and literature in \u2018Antigone\u2019 \u2014 to push us to think beyond what is known to what is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next DMTC production, \u201cPride and Prejudice,\u201d hits the stage in February 2023.
