During 2024 spring break, scheduled for March 3-9, join the University for a visit to Havana and Cienfuegos, Cuba, focusing on education, people-to-people engagement and visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites. This program, open to students, faculty and alumni, has a robust itinerary featuring the arts, cultural and historic preservation, community development and the people of Cuba \u2014 the best and most essential reason for the visit.<\/p>\n
Celebrate the contributions of Afro Cuban communities, like El Roque Society in Cienfuegos, and learn about sustained cultural and religious traditions, connecting these to contemporary issues rooted in Cuba’s colonial past. Visit landmarks like the Bay of Pigs to gain appreciation for Cuba’s many natural assets, while valuing the historical context and multiple perspectives this program offers. Cuba’s Office of the Historian introduces us to the intricate web of social, organizational and educational ecosystems that sustain Cubans through difficult times and help the nation maintain a low infant mortality rate and one of the highest literacy rates in the world.<\/p>\n
A one-credit Cuban Culture and History course is required of all non-student participants, as per the educational license that allows us the opportunity to travel to Cuba.
