This is a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The book explores a series of legal cases involving African Americans from 1920 to 1960 and shows the connections between the laws of slavery and the legal system under Jim Crow in the late 19th and 20th Century South.\u202fMany of the cases involved rendition, the legal process by which Southern states sought to return accused African Americans to Southern &#8220;justice.&#8221; This prompted battles over questions of jurisdiction, many right here in Detroit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interfaith Dinner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he Interfaith Dinner brought our community come together to celebrate our diversity of cultural and religious traditions over a meal. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Painting Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Office of Diversity &amp; Inclusion hosted Paint, Vibe and Celebrate as part of its celebration of Black History Month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Motown Museum Tour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Titans took private tour of Detroit&#8217;s Motown Museum with UDM&#8217;s Student Life Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Love Stories from the Underground Railroad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ilyon Woo discussed her recent book,\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Master, Slave, Husband, Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom, <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recounts the story of William and Ellen Craft, the most famous couple to flee enslavement in the south.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They did so by \u201chiding in plain sight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Ellen, who was light skinned, posed as a slave owner traveling northward with her personal servant, William. They made it to freedom by boat and railroad car.
