Thanks to his research, these concepts may one day become a reality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boynton and a team of nine researchers have created a new plastic material that can change its shape and properties through tempering, the rapid heating and cooling of a substance. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adi5009\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Boynton was first author of the findings published in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Science<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, one of the world\u2019s top academic journals, on Feb. 1.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis is really exciting because generally, when you make a new material, you\u2019re designing the material for one specific thing,\u201d said Boynton. \u201cWhat we wanted to do was design a material that you could take to, say the Moon or Mars, and instead of having to bring 20 different types of materials for all the different things that you would need, you can just bring one and turn it back and forth into whatever you need. And once you\u2019re done with that application, you can just reprocess and do it again. It was clear that all the work I put in with Professor Mio in the Chemistry lab and starting that research journey kind of paid off there. I don\u2019t know if I would\u2019ve necessarily predicted it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After closely watching Boynton develop into a chemist at UDM, Mio is proud of his mentee\u2019s latest accomplishment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFrom the first time I met Nick at Detroit Mercy, he showed a passion for learning about and developing new materials chemistry,\u201d Mio said. \u201cHis publication achievement would be the pinnacle of any modern scientist&#8217;s career, so to have it happen even before he has finished his graduate work speaks of Nick&#8217;s leadership potential in the field. I am so happy for Nick to have realized his dream and look forward to his future contributions.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As humans try to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly practices into their lives, Boynton wonders how they could also be applied in space.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s this huge push towards sustainability now, and for very good reasons of trying to understand how to make plastics that are recyclable. I think there\u2019s this other side of sustainability of how can we move and have humans live beyond Earth,\u201d Boynton said. \u201cAnd to do that, you have to have materials that do things that you\u2019re not used to.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boynton acknowledges that this is the first generation of these pluripotent plastics and there is more work to be done. But he hopes his paper in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Science <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inspires others to think differently about the way they make materials.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI think a lot of people are super focused on making materials for one specific thing, when I think there\u2019s a lot of potential materials that can do a ton of different things, beyond just like multifunctional,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen some really exciting work that others are doing, and we hope that this turns the gears a little bit and gets people thinking in that direction.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cFor us, we want to keep going. Because, really, it\u2019s how do you make a material that can be on the Moon or Mars. I think these ones would leave a little bit to be desired in those environments, but perhaps we can really use all the insights to really move in that direction. I think we\u2019re really starting to do that.
