Detroit Mercy\u2019s Libraries \/ Instructional Design Studio presents “Total Sensory Freak-out: Detroit’s Zeitgeist Collective, 1997 to 2008.” This art exhibit documents the 11-year life of the independent, community-run art gallery and theater.<\/p>\n
The exhibit is on view at Detroit Mercy\u2019s McNichols Campus Library from May 20-Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.<\/p>\n
“Total Sensory Freak-out: Detroit’s Zeitgeist Collective, 1997 to 2008” is the sixth exhibit in a series showcasing Detroit\u2019s cultural history and curated by Maurice Greenia, Jr., who has selected playbills, postcards, original artworks, newspaper articles and other items from his extensive collection. Greenia is an artist and a preservation specialist for the Detroit Mercy Library.<\/p>\n
From 1997 to 2008, the Zeitgeist Gallery and Performance Venue was a vibrant part of Detroit\u2019s cultural life. Funded and run solely by its members, the collective presented the work of dozens of local as well as world-renowned artists and authors in 70 art exhibits and award-winning productions of more than 40 dramatic works. The venue also hosted films, concerts and a permanent exhibit of work by internationally acclaimed outsider artists. Among the Zeitgeist’s unique programs was the Visual Jam Sessions, where the public was invited to join in making collaborative artworks using materials provided by the collective.<\/p>\n
