\"AUniversity of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry student Aiseosa Iyahen recently earned national recognition from the American Optometric Association (AOA).<\/p>\n

Iyahen, a second-year student at UDM, was a finalist in the 2026 AOA Blast from the Past Challenge, a competition in which students and residents present an optometric topic that they are passionate about. She presented on the evolution of contact lenses at the AOA\u2019s optometry meeting in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis achievement highlights Iyahen\u2019s dedication to scholarship and her commitment to advancing the profession through a deeper understanding of its history,\u201d said Amy Ferguson, clinical associate professor and director of student success at Detroit Mercy School of Optometry.<\/p>\n

Winners of the Blast from the Past Challenge are determined by a combined vote of audience members and a judging committee. Iyahen\u2019s presentation earned top honors and national recognition among peers and professionals in optometry.<\/p>\n

In addition to presenting live during AOA\u2019s annual conference, each finalist received a $1,000 stipend.<\/p>\n
