\"JuanProfessor of Philosophy Juan Carlos Flores<\/a>\u00a0has been awarded<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a three-year, $274,796 research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the translation and publication of a major medieval philosophy text.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The grant, awarded through\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The National Endowment for the Humanities (<\/span>NEH) Scholarly<\/span>\u00a0Editions and Translations\u00a0<\/span>program,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0will fund research from 2027 through 2029 led by Flores<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The project, titled\u00a0<\/span><\/span>An Annotated Translation of Henry of Ghent\u2019s Summa, art. 73\u201375 (The Questions on Language) (in 2 volumes)<\/span><\/span>, will produce an English translation, introduction and scholarly notes for articles 73, 74 and 75 of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Quaestiones\u00a0<\/span>Ordinariae<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(Summa) of Henry of Ghent, a medieval philosopher<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>theologian<\/span><\/span>\u00a0who lived from 1217 to 1293.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The three articles focus on the philosophy of language and will be translated from Latin into English for print and digital publication.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flores will collaborate on the project with Steven Marrone, professor emeritus at Tufts University.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is Flores\u2019 second NEH grant supporting research in medieval philosophy. His\u00a0<\/span>first NEH-funded project<\/span><\/a>\u00a0resulted in a 478-page critical edition, published Sept. 9, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new project will make an important medieval text on language more accessible to scholars and researchers by providing an annotated English translation alongside the original Latin scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NEH\u2019s Scholarly Editions and Translations program supports collaborative teams that edit, annotate and translate foundational humanities texts that are important to a new scholarship but are not available in adequate editions or translations.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
