University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture invites all to a virtual lecture with Angela Brooks, FAIA, on Wednesday Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. The lecture, \u201cDENSE CITY: Housing for Quality of Life and Social Change,\u201d is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
Angela Brooks, FAIA, is a recognized leader in the field of environmental and social-equity design and is responsible for her firm\u2019s development in the area of housing and policy, leading sustainable initiatives and overall design staff management. Brooks believes that it is not enough to create great buildings and has worked to create complete neighborhoods she co-founded a non-profit called Livable Places to promote good policy, density and livable communities. She lectures extensively on these topics and was 2018 Chair of the National AIA\u2019s Committee on the Environment (COTE), developing programs and advocating for policy changes at the Federal level-promoting design that achieves high levels of performance.<\/p>\n
Brooks\u2019 firm, BROOKS + SCARPA, has received over fifty major design awards including five AIA COTE \u2018Top Ten Green Building\u2019 Awards. In 2009, Brooks received the National American Institute of Architects \u2018Young Architect\u2019 Award and in 2010 she received the USA Network \u2018Character Approved\u2019 Award for her innovative work in the field of architecture and her firm was awarded the National and State Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. In 2014, her firm was awarded the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture. In 2020, she received the AIA National and Local Citizen Architect Award and the AIA State of California Maybeck Award for exemplary achievement in architectural design and \u2018a different kind of legacy\u2019 as an advocate for issues that move beyond buildings.<\/p>\n
