04/07/25 – Anatomy of a Cyber Attack Club Meeting

On April 7th, 2025, Club President Ali Laho volunteered to act as a victim in a live hacking demonstration performed by Club technician Harrison Haviland-Longo. This demonstration was a combination of a live hacking workflow, and an information Powerpoint helping break down commands and explain how the hacker thinks. Harrison began the demonstration by using a Bash Bunny Hak5 tool to gain privileged remote access to a Windows PC, moved into information gathering and basic reconnaissance, and finalized the first portion with the use of hacking tools like LaZagne and MimiKatz to uncover cached passwords on the victim’s PC. To conclude the demonstration, Harrison created a custom remote webcam streaming script to demonstrate how easily it is for a hacker to gain access to the devices connected to your computer. After this script, Harrison ran a demo “ransomware” virus script meant to imitate the pop-ups and messages built to instill a sense of urgency in the victim to encourage them to pay the hacker. This script also demonstrated the remote encryption of files, barring Victim Ali Laho’s access to important company documents.

As this was the final meeting of the year, we worked very hard on polishing this demo for our members. We would like to thank all of our members who were able to attend this meeting, and look forward to seeing you all in the Fall!
