Pursuant to the Fire Prevention Code, PA 207 of 1941, the University of Detroit Mercy follows the requirement for fire drills for postsecondary educational institutions. The requirement includes holding three fire drills each year in the university’s occupied residence halls. While it is not required to hold fire drills in any other university building, starting this academic year, the University Safety Team has decided to reinstitute fire drills in all university buildings. Once a schedule has been created for all other University of Detroit Mercy buildings, the building coordinators will be informed of the schedule. We would also like you to take this time prior to our building fire drills to familiarize yourself with the building evacuation plans of the buildings in which you work, learn, study, teach, and frequent on campus. Building evacuation points and other emergency response procedures can be found in the University of Detroit Mercy Emergency Response Plan. When reviewing the evacuation plans, ensure you have multiple ways to evacuate the building in the event that your normal route of exiting the building is blocked. This can be practiced daily by using different entrances and exits to the buildings you visit.
When reviewing the Emergency Response Plan, please pay close attention to the evacuation locations for the building you frequent. The evacuation locations are at least 500 feet from the buildings and designated for occupants to reassemble and account for others. While exiting the buildings please ensure all emergency vehicle routes remain clear.
Please visit the University of Detroit Mercy, Department of Public Safety’s website to review the Fire Extinguisher training slides. When reviewing the Fire Extinguisher Training, please remember that they are a simple tool that may put out a fire the size of a small trash can when used properly. The primary responsibility of a person that detects a fire is to alert other building occupants by activating the building fire alarm system and contacting the Department of Public Safety at 313-993-1234, when safe to do so.
We would like to take this time to thank the university community for helping us keep our community safe.
