The University of Detroit Mercy’s Honors Convocation is a cherished tradition that celebrates the exceptional academic and leadership achievements of its students.
This year’s College of Liberal Arts & Education (CLAE) ceremony was held on March 24 at Gesu Catholic Church. The gathering stood as a testament to the vibrant spirit of the CLAE community.
During the ceremony, the love felt by families, friends, professors, staff, and individuals from the CLAE community filled the church as students were called on stage.
The Honors Convocation commenced with a welcome from Dean Jocelyn Boryczka, followed by an invocation from Si Hendry, S.J., director of the Catholic Studies Program.
Next, the recipient of the Dudley Randall Poetry Prize, Sam Gilmore, shared their first-place poem “The Girl I Used to Be”.
After Gilmore’s reading, the award ceremony began, recognizing achievements across various departments of CLAE and University-wide accomplishments from the University Honors Program, Kappa Gamma Pi, and the Institue of Leadership & Service.
The event finished by honoring students with a high grade point average through the Dean’s Gold Key Award and the Dean’s Award.

Students recognized by the College excelled in their coursework, and showed dedication to extracurricular activities, co-curricular pursuits, and community service initiatives.
Each student has integrated the specific knowledge acquired within the classroom into real-world settings from clinical placements to internships, educational experiences, volunteer work, and more.
Additionally, honorees embody the core values and traditions of the University of Detroit Mercy as a Jesuit and Mercy institution.
