On September 10, the African American Studies program hosted a reception to honor its distinguished alumni and recognize exceptional contributions to the field. The event proudly celebrated Stevie Jones, Class of 2017, and Daniel A. Baxter, Class of 2001, both of whom have made significant impacts in their respective careers and communities
Attendees reflected on the accomplishments of Jones and Baxter, whose work exemplifies the values and mission of the African American Studies program.
Additionally, the reception recognized Roy Finkenbine, Professor and Co-Chair of History, for his legacy of contributions to scholarship and education in African American Studies. A new research paper prize has been named in his honor, recognizing his dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering critical discussions within the field. This award will be presented to an African American Studies minor at the CHASS Honors Convocation in March 2025.
The opportunity enabled current students, alumni, and faculty to connect and engage in meaningful conversations about the importance of African American Studies in today’s society. Justin Williams, Associate Professor of History and Director of the African American Studies Program, coordinated this important event.
