Detroit-based poet Reem Abou-Samra brought decades of poetry to share on themes of fracture, merging and identity to an evening of poetry, including works from her two collections — just: enough and Fractured: Between Truth and Lies. Alumna Zahra Kanji and UDM students Jenna Saker and Tasnim Uddim also performed original works. Through her poetry, Abou-Samra shared her experiences and reflections as an activist, mother, Muslim and Syrian-American. She has been performing for two decades in Detroit and supports open mics and other opportunities for artists in the region. In addition, she is a scholar of Political Science, Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Studies and currently teaches at University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses.
