Faye Alexander Nelson Named Chair of Detroit Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors

Detroit Mercy alumna Faye Alexander Nelson, an accomplished leader and advocate for Detroit’s growth, has been elected Chair of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Board of Directors. A graduate of Mercy College of Detroit (BA in Political Science, 1975) and the University of Detroit School of Law (JD, 1981), Faye’s election reflects the extraordinary leadership cultivated at Detroit Mercy.

As the new Chair, Faye brings decades of transformative leadership to the DSO. Her legacy includes serving as the inaugural President and CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, where she spearheaded the revitalization of the Detroit riverfront into a vibrant public space that now welcomes millions of visitors annually. This work drew over $1 billion in public and private investments and positioned the riverfront as a global symbol of Detroit’s resurgence.

Her passion for the arts and community advancement has guided her work on numerous boards, including Henry Ford Health System, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, and the DSO itself. Recognized as one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ 100 Most Influential Women in Michigan and Michiganian of the Year by The Detroit News (2022), Faye’s visionary leadership continues to shape Detroit’s future.

Currently serving as Michigan Director for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Faye leads efforts to improve child well-being and equity across employment, health, and education systems. She also recently co-chaired the International Women’s Forum World Leadership Conference, bringing global attention and economic impact to Detroit.

Faye embodies Detroit Mercy’s Jesuit and Mercy values of service, selflessness, and radical hospitality. Her appointment as Chair of the DSO Board is a testament to her lifelong commitment to enriching lives and communities, and we are proud to celebrate her continued success.
