Honoring Alumnus Luther Keith: A Life of Impact

The University of Detroit Mercy and CHASS community remembers Luther Keith, an esteemed alumnus of the Communication Studies program, whose influence spanned from journalism and community activism to music. Keith, who passed away at the age 74 on March 5, 2025, was a pioneering journalist, a champion for Detroit’s neighborhoods, and a beloved blues musician.

A trailblazer in journalism, Keith broke barriers at The Detroit News, becoming its first Black sportswriter, later serving as business editor and assistant managing editor. He also founded the Journalism Institute for Minorities at Wayne State University, mentoring future generations of journalists.

Beyond journalism, Keith founded ARISE Detroit!, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing Detroit’s neighborhoods through volunteerism and community engagement. His leadership and passion for his city inspired countless individuals to take action.

Keith was also known as Luther “Badman” Keith, a blues artist who recorded five albums and performed across Detroit. His music, like his work, brought people together and celebrated the city he loved.

A visitation for Keith will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2024 at Kemp Funeral Home in Southfield from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., with a funeral service on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., at Detroit’s Fellowship Chapel. The burial will follow at 3 p.m.

CHASS honors the legacy of Luther Keith, a valued member of our UDM and Detroit community whose memory will live on through the generations.
