Become a Piece of History: Invitation to Contribute to the CHASS Glass Mosaic Art Project

CHASS has commissioned a glass mosaic of the McNichols Campus as our Celebrate Spirit gift to the University.  Detroit artist Darcel Deneau, who focuses on streetscapes of the city, will create the mosaic that will be installed in the lobby of the Black Box Theatre.  The mosaic celebrates radical hospitality, our Celebrate Spirit theme.

In this spirit, members of our University and especially CHASS communities are invited to contribute an object that represents their departments, groups, and community partners. These objects should also reflect the rich diversity of people in our community.  Selected objects will be embedded in the glass mosaic.  A key will be created to accompany the mosaic so that each aspect of our community can be identified by viewers of this piece.

To contribute, fill out the “Object Contribution Form,” which has been sent out to CHASS and is available in the Dean’s Main Office (Briggs 108), place the form along with the object in the envelope labeled “CHASS Glass Mosaic Project,” and deliver it to the Main Office (Briggs 108) by Friday, April 18, 2025.  Objects should not be valuable and need to be small between 1-2”.

Darcel Deneau, known for her expressive and transformative work, will guide the creative process and partner with members of community.

This mural is not only an opportunity for students to be involved in the creation of public art but also a chance to showcase the collaborative spirit of Detroit Mercy. Faculty, student groups, and individual students are encouraged to reach out and get involved in the project.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can contribute to the mural, please contact Dean Jocelyn Boryczka at boryczjm@udmercy.edu.
