Professor Nancy Calleja Publishes New Graduate Textbook on Addiction Counseling

Professor and Chair of Counseling and Addiction Studies Nancy G. Calleja, Ph.D., LPC, has co-authored a new graduate-level textbook and accompanying clinical workbook published by Cognella in September 2025. The publications — Fundamentals of Addiction Counseling: An Introduction to Clinical Practice and Fundamentals of Addiction Counseling: Clinical Practice Manual — provide a comprehensive foundation in addiction treatment and are designed to support graduate courses in counseling, psychology, social work, and related fields.

The textbook covers key topics such as the effects of psychoactive substances, assessment and diagnosis, and treatment modalities, while addressing timely issues including evidence-based practices, opioid addiction, and integrated healthcare. The accompanying workbook enhances learning with case studies, reflection questions, and applied exercises.

Co-written with former Detroit Mercy faculty member Elvita Kondili, the project builds on the University’s long-standing leadership in addiction counseling education — home to the nation’s second oldest program. Calleja shared that the work was “a particular labor of love,” made even more meaningful by contributing to a program with such a rich history in advancing the clinical practice field.
