6-Mile Meet Up supports Black-owned businesses

Students and faculty interested in African American Studies can learn about the program through a social gathering that supports area Black-owned businesses. The vision of Justin Williams, associate professor of History and director of the African American Studies program, to provide an opportunity that gives faculty and students the chance to engage with community members at a local business where they can enjoy conversation over a meal. These meet-ups are designed to introduce Detroit Mercy faculty, staff and students to the rich diversity of the local Liv6 neighborhood and its deep African American history.

Held periodically throughout the academic year during the University’s dead hour, the most recent 6 Mile Meet up took place on the McNichols Campus featuring food from What’s the Dill?. Located across the street from Lansing-Reilly, this Black-owned business was the dream of Leona Gist-Milton after she attended culinary school in 1997. In November 2022, she opened What’s the Dill?, a restaurant that uses dill pickles in place of bread for unique sandwiches. She works alongside her husband, siblings, mom, father and son to bring healthy and unique eats to the Detroit community.

Another 6-Mile Meetup is scheduled for March. Visit the African American Studies Instagram or email Williams at williaj47@udmercy.edu for more information.
