Five Titans — Isabelle Francis, D.K. Mohammad, Kelsie Shammami, Kaleb Smith and Juan Willis —made up the Detroit Mercy ethics bowl team that placed seventh out of 20 twenty squads on November 16th at the Upper Midwest Regional Ethics Bowl tournament, held at the University of Chicago.
The UDM squad, called “Aristotle Loves Tomato Sandwiches,” only had one loss on the day. The cases under discussion touched on a wide range of topics, including artificial intelligence, technology, privacy, end-of-life medical interventions, animal rights and child welfare. All five students on this winning team are Political Science majors. Profs. Martin Leever and David Koukal mentored and then accompanied the team to Chicago.
The Philosophy Department hosted UDM’s annual Ethics Bowl earlier in October 2024, a legendary event which has attracted students of all majors from across the University for nearly twenty-five years. This undergraduate competition is inspired by TV’s College Bowl, but modified rules adapt the game to the subject of ethics. We are excited to see the outcomes of next year’s competition!
