Black History Month Panel Discussion: Navigating “The Talk” – Safety, Race, and Authority

This week, as part of Black History Month, panelists delivered a powerful discussion on “The Talk”—the conversation that African American parents have had for generations with their children, especially their sons, to help keep them safe in encounters with law enforcement and authority figures.

The panel featured CHASS Professors Roy Finkenbine, Erick Barnes, and Justice Williams, joined by former police, parents, and local journalist Greg Bowens who offered diverse perspectives on this topic that continues to be critical in our times.

This important event was co-sponsored by the African American Studies program, the Black Abolitionist Archive, and McNichols Campus Library, with support from the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences.
