Explore the powerful ties between Tanzanian history and Detroit Mercy’s Jesuit and Mercy values in an engaging talk with guest speaker Joseph Albert, a faculty member from Loyola High School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Albert will delve into Ujamaa, Kiswahili for “unity through community,” the anchoring political concept in Tanzania since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1961, and its resonance with Detroit Mercy’s commitment to social justice, community, and service. Joseph Albert is visiting UDM and CHASS the week of November 11th as the College builds on a partnership with Loyola High School in Dar es Salaam begun by Dean Jocelyn Boryczka in October 2012. Dean Jocelyn is excited for CHASS to extend our connection with the global Jesuit community through this partnership and with Loyola High School Detroit.
Rev. Charles Oduke, Vice President for Mission Integration, will open the event, setting the stage for an inspiring look at how Tanzanian traditions align with the Ignatian mission, challenging us to reflect on our own commitments to solidarity and community.
