Come and join us, and learn about El Salvador! After a delicious meal and cultural entertainment, hear from our keynote speaker, direct from El Salvador. Leslie Schuld will shed light on several contemporary challenges in El Salvador (focusing on the youth, and elections observations), as well as share her memories of interacting with Dean Brackley, S.J., founder of the scholarship fund, as they hosted delegations of North Americans visiting El Salvador. Shuld co-founded CIS as a non-profit in 1992 and she has been its Executive Director since 1997. (CIS is short for Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad). She has her B.A. from the University of Dayton, and a Masters degree in Human rights and Peace Education from University of El Salvador.
The event is free for Detroit Mercy students. For all others we request a donation for the UCA Jesuit Martyrs scholarship (that enables students from poorer family backgrounds to be able to attend the University of Central America or UCA, which is the Jesuit university in El Salvador). We have a sliding scale, from $10 to $50. You can RSVP to Gail Presbey (contact below) with your pledge, and bring your check made out to Jesuits Central and Southern Province (or donate on their website, being sure to choose “Dean Brackley UCA Scholarship Fund” in the drop-down “Designation” menu, near the bottom of choices). Or, send checks to Gail Presbey, Director, CLASA, University of Detroit Mercy – CLAE, 4001 W. McNichols Road, Detroit MI 48221
