The Department of Religious Studies will host the annual 2024 Cushing Distinguished Lecture on April 3 at 5:00 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. This year\u2019s lecturer is Dr. Brian K. Blount, president emeritus of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond VA, and Charlotte, NC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of his lecture this year is \u201cI Wonder if Jesus Daydreamed?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blount is a renowned scholar of the New Testament. His work focuses on the Gospel of Mark, the Book of Revelation, and areas of cultural studies and hermeneutics.\u00a0 He <\/span>has<\/span> author<\/span>ed<\/span> six books, including <\/span>Cultural Interpretation: Reorienting New Testament Criticism<\/span><\/i> (1995), <\/span>Then the Whisper Put on Flesh: New Testament Ethics in an African American Context <\/span><\/i>(2001), and <\/span>Revelation: A Commentary <\/span><\/i>(2009). Notably, in 2018, Blount served as the president of the Society of Biblical Literature.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProf. Blount is a world class scholar of the New Testament, and we are delighted to welcome him to the Detroit Mercy campus,\u201d said Todd Hibbard, professor and chair of the Department of Religious Studies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cushing Distinguished Lecture is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Ralph and Dr. Barbara Cushing, alumni of the graduate program in Religious Studies. The event serves as a continued testament of their dedication to advance scholarship within the field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
