Drawing from her expertise as a psychiatrist and an author, Christine Montross, MD, MA, will lead a virtual talk titled \u201cThe Story is at the Center: The Shared Territory of Writing and Medicine\u201d on Wed., April 10, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Montross\u2019 talk is the third in a three-part virtual series, \u201cTelling the Stories of the Health Humanities.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthcare providers are present during some of the most critical moments in human existence; birth, death, diagnosis, treatment, cure, or failure to cure.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Montross will explore the intricate relationship between writing and medicine, to<\/span> shed light on the dynamics of storytelling in the medical field that range from shaping patient narratives to fostering physicians\u2019 introspection.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She will focus on her latest book, <\/span>Waiting for an Echo: The Madness of American Incarceration<\/span><\/i> which examines how mental illness intersects with<\/span> the criminal justice in the United States.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christine Montross, MD, MA<\/span><\/span><\/strong> is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is a practicing inpatient psychiatrist and performs forensic psychiatric examinations. Dr. Montross’s first book,<\/span><\/span> Body of Work<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/span> was named an Editors’ Choice by <\/span><\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/span> and one of <\/span><\/span>The Washington Post’s<\/span><\/span> best nonfiction books of 2007. Her second book<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Falling Into the Fire<\/span><\/span><\/a>, was named a <\/span><\/span>New Yorker<\/span><\/span> Book to Watch Out For. Her latest book, <\/span><\/span>Waiting for an Echo: The Madness of American Incarceration<\/span><\/span><\/a>, was a finalist for the <\/span><\/span>Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/span> Book Prize.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
