The African American Studies program explores a diverse tapestry of history and culture, whilst emphasizing the importance of community, through a blend of scholarship, community engaged learning, and cultural events.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The program currently offers 12 courses, ranging from AAS 2000 Critical Perspectives in African American Studies to AAS 4900 Integrative Seminar.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the academic year, the program has actively engaged students and the broader community through a series of events, such as the Six Mile Meetup series. Sponsored events such as \u201cThe Congo, Michigan, and You\u201d and co-sponsored events like \u201cLove Stories from the Underground Railroad\u201d fostered an atmosphere of learning and dialogue.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Director of the African American Studies Program and Associate Professor of History, Justin Williams, reflected on this past academic year as an exciting one for the program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We had a great year collaborating across the University to provide great lectures, launching our Six Mile Meetup program, expanding our course offerings, and having more students register for the minor,\u201d said Prof. Williams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the program remains committed to its mission of education and community outreach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re looking forward to continuing to grow the curriculum, providing more resources for students, and deepening our engagement with the community,\u201d said Prof. Williams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
