The University of Detroit Mercy community gathered on <\/span>Tuesday, Sept. 10<\/span><\/b>, for the annual <\/span>Celebrate Spirit!<\/span><\/b> event, officially marking the beginning of the academic year. <\/span>CHASS is co-celebrant for this year-long event. Our College\u2019s students shared their poetry and read prayers of the faithful translated into languages from Arabic to Chinese. Dean Jocelyn Boryczka delivered an introduction to the theme of radical hospitality, the central practice in CHASS which animates our belief that diversity is our strength. She also called the community to certain actions, including an invitation to paint a rock for the Radical Hospitality rock garden located outside of Briggs, wear their radical hospitality wristbands, and collaborate in creating the College\u2019s gift, the glass mosaic being developed by a local Detroit artist.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Held in the <\/span>Student Fitness Center<\/span><\/b>, the event included the <\/span>Mass of the Holy Spirit<\/span><\/b>, celebrated by <\/span>Fr. Charles Oduke<\/span><\/b>, Vice President for Mission Integration, with a moving homily delivered by guest speaker <\/span>Marilyn Lacey, RSM<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n This year\u2019s theme, <\/span>Radical Hospitality<\/span><\/b>, centered around the core values of the <\/span>Sisters of Mercy of the Americas<\/span><\/b> and the <\/span>Society of Jesus<\/span><\/b>. Lacey\u2019s homily focused on the three pillars of radical hospitality: <\/span>remembering<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>welcoming<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>belonging<\/span><\/b>. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their role in building a community that fosters inclusion and connection, emphasizing that we all belong to a global community where hospitality starts within ourselves.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Following the Mass, students, faculty, and staff <\/span>received wristbands reflecting the three pillars and <\/span>gathered in the <\/span>Fountain Lounge<\/span><\/b> of the <\/span>Student Union<\/span><\/b> for a complimentary lunch, where the spirit of community and fellowship continued.
