Happy New Year<\/span>!  <\/span>2024 was a banner year for the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS)<\/span>!  <\/span>We kicked off the year with our new name celebrated at a Welcome Bash where we hosted <\/span>nearly 300<\/span> friends from across campus<\/span>.  <\/span>As co-<\/span>celebrant<\/span> for Celebrate <\/span>Spirit!,<\/span> our <\/span>College<\/span> practice of radical hospitality serves as the university\u2019s theme for the year<\/span>.  <\/span>The Discover Detroit immersion series began with 200 CHASS faculty, students, staff, and alumni cheering on the Tigers as they clinched their wild card spot<\/span>.  <\/span>Our enrollments soared as CHASS faculty delivered outstanding courses, curated immersion experiences, and supported students, along with our staff, as they reach for the <\/span><\/span>magis<\/span><\/span>, the more.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2025 holds great opportunities for the College<\/span>.  <\/span>The Black Box Theatre will <\/span>be <\/span>complete<\/span>d<\/span> by April with the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company (DTMC) opening its 55<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> season here on the McNichols campus in Fall 2025<\/span>.  <\/span>We are working toward ensuring that all CHASS students can engage in at least one high impact practice, ranging from an internship or immersion to a practicum or community engaged learning course<\/span>.  <\/span>Plans for <\/span>establishing<\/span> a Humanities Institute are underway. CHASS is a community <\/span>where<\/span> ideas, <\/span>goals, <\/span>dreams, and hopes become realities<\/span>.  <\/span>The hard work, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to the transformations made possible through a liberal arts education that drive us all <\/span>make<\/span> this possible<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The year ahead is also one of great uncertainty as national<\/span>, state, and local<\/span> leadership transition<\/span>s will occur<\/span>.  <\/span>Genocide, war, conflict, and violence in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and elsewhere<\/span>, including here in the US,<\/span> continue<\/span>.  <\/span>This context creates<\/span> a <\/span>generally <\/span>heightened<\/span> state of <\/span>anxiety and <\/span>stress<\/span> the reads, though differentially, onto us all<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In this season of resolutions, as we fully recognize this broader context, <\/span>let\u2019s<\/span> resolve to hold onto our value that diversity is our strength, our practice of radical hospitality, and <\/span>our belief in the liberal arts as critical to advancing the free thinking necessary for democratic society. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
