Communication Studies senior Jeremiah Steen joined 41 Michiganders honored at the 2023 Governor’s Service Awards held Nov. 28 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Steen received the Spirit of Hope Award which honors individuals serving as a beacon of hope for many and one who lifts up others and inspires people to make a difference.<\/p>\n
“I am honored to be the youngest recipient of the Spirit of Hope Award,” said Steen. “This award serves as a confirmation that my efforts to invest in the next generation are making some progress.”<\/p>\n
Steen advocates for amplifying youth voices and equitable opportunities for underinvested people in communities since he was in high school. In 2018, he became the youngest Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Fund II National Fellow.<\/p>\n
“Jeremiah is an excellent representative of the Jesuit and Mercy values in action,” said Jocelyn Boryczka, dean, College of Liberal Arts & Education. “His passion for youth philanthropy and accomplishments will drive him to make an outstanding impact in Detroit and beyond. This is just the beginning for him.”<\/p>\n
Steen’s future goal is to leverage the opportunities provided by Detroit Mercy and raise a $5M endowment to develop sustainable career pathways for Michigan\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n
