Sunday \u00a0December 21 – “<\/strong>\u00a0to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

At Detroit\u2019s latitude we will have\u00a09 hours and 3 minutes of daylight, 14 hours and 57 minutes of night time. \u00a0Our shortest day. \u00a0 Today\u2019s O\u2019Antiphon, \u201cO Oriens\u201d (\u201cO Rising Sun\u201d) tells us that the long-ago writers of these sung blessings for Advent\u2019s last days lived in the northern hemisphere. \u00a0Deeper & deeper into the days of diminishing light they sing to human longing for liberation and dawn. \u00a0Tomorrow the day will be 3 minutes longer (I think that\u2019s accurate), the dawn of the majestic march of sunrise back from it\u2019s southern-most point of Oriens.<\/p>\n

“<\/strong>O Dayspring
\n<\/em><\/strong>splendour of light and sun of justice:
\n<\/em><\/strong>Come and bring light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

These days are full of tenderness, of \u00a0giving and\u00a0hospitality, of forgiving old wounds, of allowing someone to forgive and welcome me when our connection had been wounded. \u00a0 Days, too, of longing for the healing of the world’s wounds, \u00a0 days of taking our places in the fatigue and longings of the\u00a0whole human family. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>Daring days of courage. \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cO Oriens\u201d is quite a prayer. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

O Oriens<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

First light and then first lines along the east
\nTo touch and brush a sheen of light on water
\nAs though behind the sky itself they traced
\nThe shift and shimmer of another river
\nFlowing unbidden from its hidden source;
\nThe Day-Spring, the eternal Prima Vera.
\nBlake saw it too. Dante and Beatrice
\nAre bathing in it now, away upstream\u2026
\nSo every trace of light begins a grace
\nIn me, a beckoning. The smallest gleam
\nIs somehow a beginning and a calling;
\n\u201cSleeper awake, the darkness was a dream
\nFor you will see the Dayspring at your waking,
\nBeyond your long last line the dawn is breaking\u201d.<\/p>\n
